Italian State Police receive new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4

The new Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia, which replaces the previous Gallardo in use by the Italian police force since 2004 has a 560 horsepower engine that can reach speeds of up to 203 mph. The car will begin service with the Lazio Highway Police Department in order to continue accident and crime prevention to sustain security on the Italian roads. It's generally never a good idea to try and outrun the the local constabulary, but that would be particularly true if you happen to be in Italy within the jurisdiction of Prefect Antonio Manganelli. Manganelli heads up the Italian State Police and he just took delivery of the latest police package special from the crew at Lamborghini. This time around the Bolognese automaker added the decals and lights to its new Gallardo LP560-4. Somehow the Lamborghini techs have managed to integrate all the gear that modern police officers regularly use into their diminutive supercar. The car is equipped with a video recording system so officers can record evidence and provide entertainment for the boys in blue back at the station by transmitting it wirelessly in real time. The usual array of gun racks and radio equipment is also supplemented by a cooler in the front compartment that can be used to transport separated body parts to the local emergency room, or that finger you just shot off a "potential" suspect. The Rome police have been using a Gallardo cruiser for the last five years and accumulated 87,000 apparently problem-free miles while the Bologna police have racked up 62,000 miles in another example. You can Find the video in Youtube.

Nissan introducing new owners to their GT-Rs at the Nurburgring

With a 7:29 lap time, Nissan contends its GT-R is the King of the 'Ring. What better place, then, to introduce the new supercar to its European owners than the track infamously known as the Green Hell? In conjunction with the Silverstone International racing school, Nissan is taking some 1,300 European GT-R customers to the Nurburgring over the course of 19 days to take ownership of their vehicles with some performance driving tutelage. The program at the 'Ring follows a similar one held for 500 British customers at Silverstone, the former host of the British Grand Prix. According to Nissan and Silverstone International, about half of the participants had taken some sort of advanced driving course before, but the overwhelming majority of them said the GT-R Academy was the best they'd experienced. We're still waiting for Nissan NA to offer something similar at Laguna, Road America or Miller Motorsports park. Just sayin'.

Subaru releases JDM-only 20th Anniversary Edition Impreza WRX STI

Celebration and disappointment -- that's what the Subaru Impreza WRX STI 20th Anniversary edition brings to the party. Celebration because it marks two decades of low-mounted, boxer-powered, all-wheel-drive fun and disappointment because the Takumi concept we saw earlier this month – assumed to be a glimpse of the future Spec-C WRX – was just an early unveiling of this limited edition Impreza. To make matters worse, the 20th Anniversary WRX doesn't get much in the way of modifications. The only substantive changes to the STI's dynamics come from a new set of coilovers with retuned springs and shocks to offer a more planted ride, along with thicker front and rear anti-roll bars and a set of 18-inch aluminum wheels to compliment the only available hue (white). Body mods are also kept to a minimum, with only a black lip spoiler and rear wing subtly proclaiming the STI's special status. No special edition would be complete without the prerequisite badging, so in addition to leather Recaros with red stitching and a matching shift knob, a commemorative plaque on the center console and a new set of door sills are the only thing letting people know that the Impreza is one of the 300 limited edition examples. Oh, and there's a special red pouch for the key fob too. Sales are beginning in Japan as you read this, carrying a price tag of 4,126,500 yen.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S

When Mercedes-Benz unveiled the convertible version of its very rare SLR McLaren 722 S Coupe late last month, all it had for us were ethereal renderings of what the car would look like. This week the German automaker has given unto us a gallery's worth of high-res photography showing what is likely to become the world's fastest convertible. The SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S features the same 650-hp supercharged 5.5L V8 as the coupe version, but lops off its top in favor of a power soft top that can actually sustain 200+mph speeds. The only other convertible we can think of that could possibly compete is the recently spied 602-hp Bentley Continental GTC Speed, the coupe version of which can crest 200 mph. Hmm... we're getting a good idea for a comparison test. Excuse us while we make a few calls.

Kahn Cosworth Sport 300 to Debut at MPH show

Afzal Kahn is a maverick, a flamboyant character with an unbelievable spirit. This is the man who hopes his company’s newest creation, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport-based Kahn Cosworth Sport 300 will help spark a fire that will revive the British motor industry. A tall order. After months of teasing Kahn Cosworth will finally officially show the car at the 2008 MPH show where fans can ogle it to their heart’s content. Better yet, they can drop off a cheque for £69,995 so one can be delivered to them. For that they get a fully-kitted Kahn Cosworth Sport 300 fitted with a new Cosworth fully adjustable electronic module to improve handling and an engine upgrade. The engine is covered in carbon fiber, while the vehicle itself runs on in 285/35-22 tyres. Extremely important, according to Kahn himself, is that the car sports that expensive F1 numberplate said to be worth millions in money. In-car entertainment, or ICE, is taken care of by two Alpine screens measuring 7 inches for the rear, connected to a multi-region DVD player and two Phillips cordless phones, iPod connection, head-up display, the usual dash-mounted display and an optional rear and front parking camera. Plenty of exterior kit to keep any design enthusiast busy, including Cosworth aluminium foot pedals, Nappa leather interior, white stitching all the way, stainless steel door sill plates with an engraved Cosworth logo, in case you didn’t realise what car it was, a perforated gear lever and Cosworth leather or Alcantara steering wheel, stitched by humans. Last but not least, that red start/ stop button completes its sportiness. Looks alright doesn’t it?

Twin-turbo Saleen Parnelli Jones Mustang

There's a special place in our hearts for the Saleen Parnelli Jones Mustang. After a week in the Autoblog Garage we fell in love with the wonderful 302-ci V8, amazingly sharp handling, and Trans-Am inspired looks. If we were to pick any of the current Mustang variants, the PJ would probably be it. Because of the collectability of the car (a total of 500 were produced) we're guessing that most owners have left their cars stock, but one particular owner decided to make his Parnelli Jones Mustang truly unique. How? He added dual 57mm Precision turbos, upgraded forged pistons, aluminum heads, a full three-inch exhaust system, and much, much more. In total, the motor produces 768 horsepower and 769 lb-ft torque -- at the wheels! The look of the car remains completely unchanged, making it as much of a sleeper as a car painted in Grabber Orange can be. The modded Parnelli is now up for sale on eBay Motors, and we're wishing that we had significantly more funding in our bank accounts.

Nissan GT-R documentary by National Geographic

Over four years ago, National Geographic approached Nissan to see if it could follow the development of a vehicle from conception to production for its "Inside" series. Nissan's response, "We've got something for you. It's called the GT-R." So after signing the world's thickest NDA, National Geographic's film crew was afforded unprecedented access to Nissan's design, engineering and manufacturing facilities, along with spending time at the test track and with Nissan/Renault's rock-star CEO and Manga-hero, Carlos Ghosn. The 47-minute documentary covers almost every aspect of the GT-R's development, although it's slightly dumbed-down and thoroughly over-dramatized for mass consumption. Despite that, it's an entertaining trip, and watching Ghosn almost get sick in the passenger seat of a GT-R development mule makes it even more appealing.

Tunes the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

Common sense tells us that a 450+ horsepower 6.3L V8 is completely unnecessary in a small sedan, but our passion for cars rarely relies on sensibility. Perhaps for that same reason Carlsson is offering a tuning package for the C63 AMG that bumps horsepower to 565 and torque to more than 500. This gives the CK63 S the ability to reach 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds, and the top speed has been increased to 300 km/h. Helping to put all that power down is an upgraded coilover suspension system and a new limited slip differential. Carlsson is also offering subtle body upgrades including a new front and rear spoiler, lightweight forged wheels, and interior accents. All together Carlsson has produced a package that makes the potent C63 AMG even more so, which it sorely needs if the German sedan ever hopes to catch the 556-hp Cadillac CTS-V.

Knight Rider gets picked up for full season

Oh dear. E! is reporting that the Peacock has ordered up nine more episodes of Knight Rider, meaning that NBC has locked in the show for a full season, and thanks to our inexplicably popular Knight Rider Liveblog, my Wednesday nights are effectively booked between 8 and 9 PM Eastern for the foreseeable future. The show's viewership grew last week by 900,000 and it's doing well with crap-tolerant males in the 18-34 and 18-49 demos, so this isn't all that surprising. Imagine what the numbers would be like if the show were actually any good...Anyway, see you during Wednesday night's liveblog (and, it seems, a bunch more after that).

Nick Hogan released from jail

The incarceration of Nick "Hogan" Bollea has come to an end after just 166 days. Offspring of famous WWE wrestler Terry "Hulk Hogan" Bollea, the youngest Hogan had been sentenced to eight months in jail for reckless driving last May after crashing his dad's souped up yellow Toyota Supra in Florida back in August 2007. Though Bollea walked away from the crash with minor injuries, his friend, John Graziano, who was riding shotgun at the time, sustained serious injuries that will require medical care for the rest of his life. In addition to serving jail time, Bollea will also be on probation for five years and have his license suspended for three. Bollea was apparently a model inmate, getting off early on account of "good time" credit earned while in the clink. TMZ.com reports that after reuniting with his mother outside the jailhouse, the ex-con returned home to a "thumping party" complete with cops on hand to keep things in check. He also returned home to a set of divorced parents and a really hot sister, and the public is on the edge of its seat waiting to hear if Nick was really serious about starting a reality show based on his oh-so-interesting life. You can check out video of Nick's reunion with this mom (or his sister, who can tell?)

Carbon fiber to be replaced by Buckypaper?

The name is strange, and the material seems to possess otherworldly strength, but it's all very serious. Buckypaper is a new material composed of carbon nanotubes that promises to revolutionize composite materials. Stacking sheets of buckypaper together nets a material that's 500 times stronger than steel, yet 10 times lighter. Florida State University is working on making the material inexpensive to produce in large batches of ultra-strong sheets, and the possible applications are wide and varied. Airplanes, automobiles, household items, the possibilities are endless, though we'd be most interested to see buckypaper mature to the point where it can comprise a monocoque shell for an automobile. There are challenges to getting the nanotubes to arrange properly for high strength, and bonding something with such surface smoothness is also difficult, but the promise of a new wonder-material has built a lot of excitement and could one day replace carbon fiber as the exotic material of choice to both lighten and strengthen our cars at the same time.

More Rendered Speculation: Toyota/Subaru FR sportscar, no turbos for the EU

Japan's buff books are at it again, peppering a bit of informed speculation with a healthy dose of rendered conjecture to create images of Toyota's front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car. While we dig the pic above, which blends a bit of Fisker Karma with the Mitsuoka Orochi, we're giving the design a snowcone's chance in Hades of resembling the production version of the coupe. The renderings posted below the fold seem a bit more plausible and the dimensions, measuring 4,300mm long (14.1 feet), 1730mm wide (5.7 feet) and with a wheelbase of 2,570mm (8.4 feet), makes it a little smaller than the Scion tC that the FR coupe could replace. According to 7Tune, which translated the text from a recent article in BestCar, the design is aimed to change people's perception of Toyota by offering a vehicle with "wonderful style." While aesthetics might be a top priority, if Toyota wants to capture some of the mystique that surround the old AE86, it had better drive as good as it looks. For better or worse, the coupe will be underpinned by the current Subaru Legacy platform, which makes use of front struts and a multi-link arrangement in the rear. The conversion of the chassis from all-wheel-drive to rear-wheel-drive has caused some headaches around ToMoCo HQ, with one engineer saying the suspension from the Legacy is "weak and terrible." We wonder how much got lost in the translation. Power is still expected to be provided by a 2.0-liter boxer four cribbed from Subaru, with between 190 and 200 horsepower sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. An automatic gearbox will be offered after the initial launch and don't be surprised if a convertible variant is available further down the road. Autocar chimed in with its own inside sources, saying that due to new emissions requirements in the EU, turbocharged WRX or STI variants of the Subaru-badged coupe won't be offered. The Toyota version, however, will be sold in the UK (contradicting earlier reports) and that there's a chance that it could wear a Supra badge when it goes on sale for £20,000 in 2011.

Insurance companies close track day and advanced training loopholes

If you've taken your car to the track for either an open lapping session or an advanced driver education course, you're undoubtedly aware of the potential risks. While most insurance policies say that the car isn't covered if it's participating in a "timed event," that's all changing now that track time is becoming more common. A report by The New York Times goes into detail about the loophole and how the big insurers are taking measures to include high-performance driving schools and track days. One interviewee has decided to stop his weekend excursions altogether after learning about the policy changes, and more disturbingly, when another player in the piece asked his insurance company if his Subaru WRX STI was covered during a track event, his policy was dropped six months later. While the well-to-do are largely immune from the new terms, purchasing dedicated track-day toys or additional insurance, those of us with shallow pockets might have to think twice before we ring our rides out as God intended.

Infiniti prices G37 Sedan and G37x Coupe

From the second we learned of the G37 Coupe, we immediately wanted to know when the larger, more powerful 3.7L V6 would find its way under the hood of the sedan. The answer to that question is the 2009 model year, and even though the new powerplant provides a class-leading 328 ponies mated to an all-new seven speed automatic transmission, it won't break the bank much more than the last model. Pricing for the new G37 Sedan starts at $33,250, which is $1,000 more than the 2008 model but still more affordable than the Infiniti's main competition in the entry luxury market. The G37 Coupe returns for 2009 with the same sexy lines from last year, but has added the new standard seven-speed automatic and available AWD to make the G37x. The two extra cogs helps to raise the price of entry to $35,900, which is $1,000 more than the 2008 model. AWD brings the price of entry for the G37x to $38,700. The seven-speed automatic has Drive Sport (DS) mode and Adaptive Shift Control (ASC), but if automated manual shifting isn't your thing, a six-speed manual gear box is available for both the coupe and sedan. Each are now available in four trim levels for the first time: the G37, G37 Journey, G37S Sport 6MT and G37x AWD. Pricing for the upcoming G37 convertible has not been announced, but we should learn more during its unveiling at the 2008 LA Auto Show next month.

Spy Shots: 2010 Ford Mustang GT caught parked

Spy shots of the 2010 Ford Mustang are an easy thing to come by lately, as Ford has seemingly taken to driving prototypes around Detroit just for fun. We've shown you the base V6 model wearing little camo, the GT500 and even the car's interior. Now we bring you shots of the '10 Mustang GT model that were recently snapped in the parking lot of a strip mall. The shots show of all the goods, including the new front end inspired by the Giuigiaro Mustang Concept that debuted in 2006 at the LA Auto Show. The refreshed '10 Mustang GT has a much harder job on its hands than did the 2004 model that kicked off the modern Mustang era. That car enjoyed a rear-wheel-drive muscle car segment of just one – itself – for years. The new Mustang, however, will find the Dodge Challenger and brand new Chevy Camaro waiting for it next year.

Best Car Renders The GT-R Sedan

Although the R35 GT-R sedan has already been dismissed by Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn as a silly idea, that didn't stop Best Car from taking it upon themselves to render another sedan rendition of the GT-R.  From what we can see of the pictures, nothing really stands out for this sedan model besides the addition of another door panel, and that's good enough for us.  Considering the fact that the R34 Skyline did come in a sedan variant that was RWD, it's possible that a sedan variant with the GT-R bodystyle may be released in the future to fill in the gap that separates the 370GT (G37 to us here in the States) and the R35 GT-R, so speculation really isn't that wishful, is it?

Acura Magic 8 Ball

Honda's engines have always been a bit special. Not Mazda rotary, miller-cycle or tiny V6 special, but a bit off the beaten path and resistant to market trends. For decades the Japanese automaker insisted on making engines that rotate the opposite direction than the rest of the industry (in line with its motorcycle roots), and took what seemed like an eternity to go back on its founders aversions to any more than four cylinders. Well, as anyone who's stepped into an Acura dealership knows, a V6 still doesn't cut it when you're trying to lure customers away from the likes of Lexus and BMW. And the new TL may have the company's most powerful V6 to date, but even in today's socio-economic climate, luxury consumers still want V8 muscle. Reports now indicate that Honda is ready to cough it up. The confirmation reportedly comes straight from Honda CEO Takeo Fukui, who says that a V8 engine will be earmarked towards the company's luxury brand Acura. No official word on where the eight-cylinder engine will land, but we can expect it to find its way into the engine bay of the top-of-the-line RL and probably an SUV, as well. Fukui reportedly promises his V8 will be highly efficient, but while we won't expect it to rotate in the opposite direction, it promises to plug the gap between the company's existing V6s and the V10 in the highly anticipated successor to the NSX.

IS350 D1 Drift Car Unveiled By WedsSport

WedsSport will be competing in the D1 Grand Prix next year with their newest drift machine, which comes in the form of a Lexus IS350.  Unsurprisingly, the OEM IS350 powerplant has been removed and replaced with the more prominent Supra 2JZ-GTE motor, which has been tuned to a heart stopping 780hp.  The 2JZ derives its power from a T04Z turbocharger, and all the handling characteristic of the vehicle have been upgraded and tuned by WedsSport.  The sports a widebody kit, GT wing, and bright yellow rims that'll definitely win some style points during the competition.

Mugen Tuned Honda Odyssey

Announced just announced yesterday and released this morning throughout Japan, the Odyssey is now Mugen dressed and tuned. Two kits are available, one for the Absolute Odyssey and the other for the standard version (M, L, Li). These kits include an Aero front bumper and side and rear spoilers. Also included are an exhaust, brake pads, aluminum wheels, and interior sports mats.
Expect a selling price of 2000€ for both versions of this high-end package.

Corvette C7 put on indefinite hold

According to multiple unnamed sources speaking with Autoweek, General Motors has put its plans for a C7 Corvette on "indefinite hold, with no official or set timetable." That's a pretty broad admission, but not entirely surprising considering the financial issues plaguing GM, the rest of the domestics and the world as a whole. Originally it was thought that the current C6 Corvette would undergo significant upgrades over the course of the next five years, with the C7 coming to market in 2014. That timeframe doesn't appear to hold water anymore, and Autoweek maintains that GM's leadership doesn't have a clear plan for what the future holds for the 'Vette, not to mention the rest of the General's lineup. However, Corvette vehicle-line executive Tom Wallace assured the weekly pub that the halo coupe isn't going anywhere. "We're still working on future Corvettes," Wallace said, and "there are changes, some neat stuff, coming for 2010 that I can't talk about yet." Wallace went on to say that the 2010 model wouldn't be considered an all-new car and that the 35-mpg CAFE standards for 2020 are having an effect on future drivetrains specs of the next Corvette.

Mitsubishi Refreshs Their Japanese EVO X Line-Up

Blistein, Recaro, BBS, and Twin Clutch-SST (Sport Shift Transmission) are basically the most important improvements you'll find on this line-up refresh. Three models are now available, the GSR, GSR-Premium (5 speed manual gearbox or Twin-Clutch-SST), and S-AWC. The Premium version will has an improved interior with Recaro Leather seats for example. The third version, the RS, the down to real and affordable fun Evox only available with a 5 speed manual gear Box and with 4WD without S-AWC. Our three EVO Xs provide 300PS with a torque of 422Nm. Prices in Japan range between 3.150 Million Yen for the RS (23200€) to 5.050 Million Yen for the GRS-Premium with Twin Clutch-SST (37200€).

Chevy auctioning off the 2010 Camaro

The all-new Chevy Camaro is a pony car that's a few months away from its scheduled production date, so that means it's charity auction time. Ford and Chrysler have already proven that a new Mustang or Challenger can bring hundreds of thousands of dollars to a deserving charity, and GM and the College for Creative Studies hope they can create similar bidding magic. Up for grabs on eBay is the number three production Camaro. It's a loaded SS model with a 422 hp 6.2L V8 mated to a six speed manual tranny. The winning bidder should take delivery of the vehicle at Suburban Chevrolet Cadillac Saab HUMMER of Ann Arbor, MI in the spring of 2009, but the auctioneer warns that delivery could be delayed until later in the year. The winning bidder will also have to come strong with the Benjamins, too, as three bidders have already brought the price over $40,000, and the auction doesn't end until October 25. We're sure the folks at CFCS would be happy if the General can surpass its own auction success from the ZR1.

2010 Nissan FR Sports Car?

Affordable rear-wheel drive performance looks set to make a comeback, as both Nissan and Toyota are planning small, sporty coupes that should stack up rather nicely in performance and price. Another player comes from Korea in the form of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which is set to do battle with the Mustang until the other Japanese players show up (assuming they make it to the U.S. market). We expect both the Toyota and the Nissan to use four cylinder engines, with manual transmissions sending power to the rear wheels. Reports indicate that the Nissan may use a turbocharged 1.6-liter unit putting out somewhere north of 200-horsepower, but less than 250. That would leave the 370Z to do battle at a slightly higher performance plateau and should allow Nissan to keep the price comparatively low, though we believe that both Nissan coupes could be based on the same platform. We should know more soon enough, as previous reports peg the new FR coupe to debut sometime in 2010. There's one more rendering after the break.

Ferrari California Sold Out Until 2011

Ferrari is well known for its long waiting lists that buyers struggle year after year to get on in order to purchase one of their newest models.  However, analysts this year were skeptical with how well the Ferrari California would do considering the state of the U.S. economy, and we're happy to say that the prancing pony brand seems to be managing just fine.  The Ferrari California is officially sold out for the next three years all the way 'til 2011, and the only thing Ferarri has seen change is the amount of speculators that junk up the lists.  By speculators we mean the guys that sign up for preorders, then sell their spots to people that actually want to buy the car, and the economy seems to be tightening the belt on this waiting list junkies, which is always a good thing for the true buyers out there. The Ferrari California comes on strong with a 460hp 4.3L V8, seven-speed dual clutch transmission, aluminum body panels, carbon-ceramic brakes, and shared platform with the Maserati GranTurismo.  By now you should be able to download an available update for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue that allows you to purchase the car with credits while in-game, so if you're curious on how it'll be to take this car out to the track via virtual reality, be sure to check it out.

Mitsubishi Evolution X FQ400 gets the green light

It was only a matter of time before Mitsubishi's British engineers tired of relentlessly beating the FQ300 and FQ360 versions of their homegrown Evos. So it's no surprise that after a 400-hp version of the Evo X successfully campaigned in the Britcar Championship, Mitsubishi finally gave the go-ahead to its crack team of in-house tweakers to produce a road going version for public consumption. The FQ400 is on its way. If the Mitsu team holds true to the original ADR Motorsport-developed Evo, expect a new turbocharger, exhaust manifold and fuel system, along with a reworked ECU to make use of the extra boost and petrol. Naturally, output will be related to the FQ400's name, with 400hp being delivered to all four wheels through a manual gearbox. A top speed of 170 mph and a 0-60 time of around 3.5 seconds shouldn't be too hard to achieve, and with a reworked suspension, upgraded brakes and some aerodynamic enhancements, Lambo owners should think twice before cutting the FQ400 off at their first track day at Silverstone. Pricing hasn't been released yet, but expect the Mitsubishi Evolution X FQ400 to crest the £45,000 mark when it goes on sale next year in the UK.

Hyundai releases Genesis Coupe performance numbers

The Genesis Coupe is being launched in South Korea this week, and we've already heard from CAR regarding their testing of the 310-hp 3.8L V6 model. Hyundai released its own performance numbers for the hotly anticipated RWD coupe, and it also included information for the turbocharged 2.0L base model. While CAR achieved a fairly respectable 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds for the V6 model, Hyundai is claiming a sprint to 62 takes 6.3 seconds. In the Korean home market, the force-fed 2.0L base model will achieve 223 hp and 220 lb-ft with premium fuel, and 210 hp with regular. U.S. customers will reportedly only receive the 210-hp version, and you'll hit that magic number at 6,000 RPM while the turbocharged nature of the 2.0L helps you hit peak torque at a low 2,000 RPM. Hyundai claims the base Coupe's 0-62 time is a rather leisurely 8.3 seconds, but we're guessing that plenty of enthusiasts will get their hands underhood in an effort to greatly boost those numbers. Korean market pricing starts at 23,200,000 Korean won for the base model and 33,920,000 won for the top of the line V6 model. That's $18,728 and $27,382 in U.S. currency, but Hyundai won't announce official U.S. pricing until closer to the Genesis Coupe's spring 2009 debut.

UPDATE: A source inside Hyundai has told Autoblog to expect a 0-60 time of around 7.5 seconds for the 2.0-liter turbocharged Genesis Coupe. The combination of less weight (under 3,500 pounds) and a retuned engine (Hyundai is still months away from launching the Coupe in the U.S.) will bring performance up to par, compared to its Korean counterpart.

Nissan recalls 200,000 vehicles over passenger air bag issue

Nissan is recalling 200,000 vehicles due to a faulty sensor system that could affect the car's passenger sid airbag. The problem is described as an issue with an electrical component that could interfere with the sensor system, which could then prevent the side airbag from deploying in certain circumstances. We gather from the report on Recall.gov that the sensor telling the car whether or not someone's riding shotgun could malfunction, and in the event of a crash the car could assume no one's sitting there at not deploy the passenger airbag. Most of the vehicles affected are 2007 or 2008 Nissan Altimas, tallying over 140,000 units of that model in all. Other models affected include '07 and '08 examples of the Infiniti EX35, G35 Sedan, G37 coupe and the Nissan 350Z, Rogue and Murano. The Japanese automaker claims that there have been no injuries as a result of the defect, but apparently it was deemed significant enough to pay for a recall and be safe today rather than sorry tomorrow. Owners of an affected Nissan vehicle can call 1-800-647-7261 and Infiniti owners can dial 1-800-662-6200 for more information, as dealers are able to test the system and replace the passenger-side seat cushion where the offending hardware is located.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe tested in Korea

Hyundai is currently holding the first round of press drives featuring the Korean-spec Genesis Coupe and CAR's Middle-Eastern arm has released the first ever review of the automaker's entrant into the realm of rear-wheel-drive performance. CAR's test was apparently limited to the 310-hp, 3.8-liter V6 model equipped with the six-speed automatic gearbox, allowing the 3,500-pound coupe to sprint to 62 in 5.9-seconds. With more torsional rigidity than the E46 BMW M3, the imported British pub reports that tail-out antics are easily achieved and the exhaust note is "thoroughly enjoyable." The list of gripes is brief, including steering that's a bit too light for the tester's taste, some less-than-savory plastics, the lack of paddle shifters on the steering wheel and compromised trunk space on account of the hatch's odd shape. But overall, CAR seems suitably pleased with the Genesis Coupe, impressed with the bang-for-the-buck quotient and the fact that the new two-door delivers something the Koreans have lacked up until now: soul and emotion.

Dodge bringing Viper-powered Challenger SRT10 Concept

Though the Official Car of SEMA this year is the Chevy Camaro, we expect tons of tuners to show up in Las Vegas with the Dodge Challenger. The Challenger has been on sale all year, which has given the customizing crowd plenty of time to modify the new muscle car. None, however, will match the vehicle that Dodge itself is bringing to Sin City. Meet the Challenger SRT10 Concept, which sports an 8.4L V10 engine graciously donated by a Viper SRT10. You can see the Challenger SRT10 Concept hanging out with a Viper SRT10 ACR in our gallery below, as well as what happens when you attempt to transfer the engine's 600 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque to the ground through the Challenger's rear tires. Needless to say, enough tire smoke is produced to affect the weather in China. Other mods include a functional carbon fiber shaker hood that feeds air to the voluminous V10, a carbon fiber front splitter and rear deck lid, a new rear spoiler, BILSTEIN shocks at all four corners, larger wheels, bigger brakes and quad exhaust tips out back. More carbon fiber trim can be found in the cockpit along with new sports seats and a red engine start push-button just like in the Viper. Uh... we likey, but we also want to know how serious an exercise this is. Could Dodge actually build and sell the Challenger SRT10 now that we know the Viper's V10 fits between its front wheels just fine? Is this Dodge's answer to the Shelby Mustang GT500KR?

Nissan offers more evidence of GT-R 'Ring run: pic of tires

Nissan released a second video of the incredible 7:29 lap time achieved by the GT-R earlier this year at the Nürburgring Nordschleife along with a photo of the stock tires that were installed on the car at the time. It did so to dispel accusations that the time might not be 100% authentic. Porsche in particular seemed highly suspicious, and boldly claimed its belief that Nissan wasn't using stock tires at the time. The new video starts with some off-track buildup and shows the 50kg of test equipment that was on-board the car at the time, as well. Although we don't speak Japanese, we think that's what they're talking about along with discussing the fresh stock tires that were fitted to the car. The actual lap starts about 4 minutes in and looks pretty authentic to us. We're sure there will continue to be questions and complaints from all sides in this controversy, and we know that this is starting to turn into a a bit of a melodrama, but we really can't help ourselves.

GMAC limits loans to buyers with 700+ FICO rating

If you're in the market for a new car, you'd better get your credit score in order first. Auto lending units are looking for top tier customers right now, and GM's captive credit arm is going so far as to mandate a FICO rating of 700 or higher. GMAC is requiring this measure in response to the instability in the global capital and credit markets. The move is likely to cost GM some sales, but according to credit information services company Experian, 74.3% of all auto loans went to consumers with a credit score of over 700. That number is up from the 71% average of 2007, and the number is likely to increase again next year as a result of our country's current economic calamity. Mandating near perfect credit may sound like one of the best possible ways to ensure GM will see even lower sales totals at the end of October, but that's likely the only way GMAC can get loans from banks. The question isn't whether GM will be the only automaker to look for FICO ratings of 700+, it's whether any other automaker won't follow suit.

Tanner Foust captures second straight Formula Drift championship

Our never-ending interest in the upcoming U.S. Top Gear has us usually thinking of Tanner Foust as a television host, so we often forget that he has another day job sliding a Nissan 350Z around racetracks in the Formula Drift series. Tanner came into the final round this weekend at Irwindale Speedway at the top of the points race, and he needed to stay ahead of Sam Hubinette in his Dodge Viper and Rhys Millen in his Pontiac Solstice to capture his second straight championship. He did just that, finishing in second place behind Vaughn Gitten Jr., who captured his first win in the series in his Falken Tire Ford Mustang. The top 16 drivers from the event also qualified for the upcoming Red Bull Drifting World Championship next month in Long Beach. We braved the flying chunks of rubber (no, really - there's a reason Formula Drift has more tire sponsors than any other motorsports series) for more info go too FormulaD.com

Subaru STI Takumi Concept

Subaru unveiled a new WRX STI concept at the Motorsport Japan 2008 event in Tokyo last week, and many show goers found the name to be just as interesting as the car itself.  Dubbed the "Takumi" Concept, this may be the first time we've heard of a Japanese car manufacturer naming one of their concepts after an anime character, at least in the last couple of years.  The current speculation of the Takumi Concept is that it may be posing as the future STI Spec-C, and modifications for this STI variant includes a healthy weight reduction, revised exterior, and an upgraded suspension configuration.  We'll see just how "Takumi" will play out for Subaru, and keep yourselves posted here at Import2race.com for any further news on the vehicle.

Next-Gen S3000?

Rumors have been flying around since Honda's OSM Concept was unveiled to the public eye, and while there has been no direct confirmation, some have already been calling it the next generation S2000.  Although the OSM Concept has been spec'd out as a front wheel drive vehicle, the open-top form of the concept makes it a very conspicuous model, and it is highly probable that Honda might just be using it as a masquerade for the next generation Honda S2000. As for what's going to be under the hood, it really is going to be a toss up given the lack of details, but that won't keep people from speculating.   Rumors have included gas guzzling V6 engines, and the new 3.0L and 3.5L engine that's available for the new TL have been brought to the rumor table.  If this were the case, it would only be right if we were to dub the future S2k an S3000, which doesn't sound to bad off the tongue.  Other possible engine entries include a hybrid engine or a lighter 2.2-2.5L 4-cylinder engine for the fuel economic sports enthusiast.  However this new S2000 turns out, no one can deny the similar design language between the OSM Concept and the S2k, and we're guessing that we'll see exactly how this unfolds within the next year.

GT-R Owner Busts Tranny, Nissan Claims Not Covered Under Warranty

So I was talking to Dave this weekend about this but he hadn’t heard about it so I thought I’d pass it on to you. It appears that one Nissan GT-R owner has broken his tranny and Nissan won’t fix it under warranty because of too many launches with VDC disabled: Another forum member clarifies that “you have to turn off VDC to activate LC, and you have to sign a paper saying your warranty is voided if you turn of VDC, and while VDC is off, you cause damage. It is clearly stated in the manual/warranty, as well as is put into writing and you have to sign, when you pick up the car.” Below the jump, the personal account, in the owner’s words, from a thread titled “do not launch your gtr or take the vdc off, time to bend over guys its gonna hurt.” Since this all comes from a forum, it’s pretty much hearsay at this point but it’s still interesting. Here’s the entire post: I was driving my gtr two weeks ago and I heard a loud noise coming from the rear. I turned immediately had my gtr towed to crown nissan st. petersburg fl. They didn’t touch my car only called some techs from tennessee to look at the car and record the noise, 4 days later two guys from japan to download some info from the car then left. Then I get a call from the dealer to tell me the news, and they told me that the car was driven without vdc too much and nissan will not warranty the transmission which they said was destroyed, I asked them how much to fix it they told me 20k, no freaking way I will pay 20k on top of what i just paid for the car. I called the gtr number and also talked to nissan consumer affairs got nowhere, now the car is sitting at the dealer. I know we shouldn’t launch the car but why own it if you cant use this function, don’t sell a car that goes 0-60 in 3.4 sec if the only way you can achieve this speed is to void the warranty , false advertising. Here is the bad news people were fearing it has happened to me and Nissan has told me there are already three people in my shoes, if you are one of these people email me, we have got to get together on this. Just think if any of you guys have taken the vdc off just a few times you have already voided your warranty, good luck what a joke nissan.

Nissan of Japan Puts A Halt To GT-R Orders

The exact reason hasn't yet been given, but Nissan has officially put a stop to all orders for the R35 GT-R at this moment.  This mandate only applies to Nissan of Japan at the moment, and while we're not sure what other regions will follow suit at this point, it might be wise to take that GT-R order right now while you still can.  While the announcement is only official in the corporate and dealership ranks, no public announcement has been given for this stoppage, and we'll be sure to update you guys with more information once available.

Tuning CL600

If Drake, the ur-vampire from Blade Trinity, were a car, this is the car he would be. Starting with a CL600, tuning firm Kicherer didn't waste time throwing pieces at the car's already aggressive styling. Instead, Kicherer attacked the CL's jugular: sloppy performance due to the car's portliness.
The biturbo V12 gets 53 extra horses to corral 570 in total, torque gets smacked up to 664 lb-ft., the engine gets a new transmission control module to better deal with the extra juice, and out back, the rear axle gets a locking rear differential. The car is lowered an inch, and firmer springs help keep things settled when it's go time. Will all this turn the car into a cheetah? Probably not, but with the carbon goodies added throughout and the 20-inch Kircherer RS-1 wheels, it will look mighty good doing whatever it does.

Lexus IS250 Sports Concept Goes Down Under

With the Sydney Motor Show going on this week, Lexus took the opportunity to unveil their IS Sports Concept.  The concept is essentially an IS250 sedan stuffed full of F-Sport accessories, and goodies such as six-piston calipers in the front, 4-piston calipers in the rear, upgraded shock absorbers, sway bars, chassis braces, air intakes, a heavy-duty clutch, short shift kit, high-flow exhaust, 19" forged alloys, carbon-fiber engine cover, and unique spoilers both front and back make up the Sport Concept.  Try saying the three times fast.  Lexus is still trying to figure out just how feasible it'll be to offer the IS250 with this performance setup as a special trim, but don't be too disappointed if they don't.  The full line up of performance parts we just mentioned will be going on sale for the IS250 pretty soon, so be sure to watch out for that as well.

Nissan 370Z Prototype

A 370Z prototype was spotteda again in Germany, this time wearing barely any camoflauge.  It's refreshing to finally see the front headlamps and rear taillights in the flesh, and the rear side of the vehicle seems to flare out a bit more than the original 350Z, which is something we're definitely not mad about.  Many comparisons are being made about the rear-end of the 370Z to the Porsche Cayman coupe, and given the fact that the 370Z will be holding a 300-plus horsepower engine also similar to the Cayman, it's safe to say that Nissan's giving the better bang for the buck. Set to make an official appearance at the upcoming LA Auto Show in November, we'll be sure to update you guys when Nissan releases the official spec sheet.

Mitsubishi Enchances The EVO X For 2009

This coming year, Mitsubishi of Japan is enhancing their EVO X with bigger and better upgrades to appeal to the better nature of sport car enthusiasts that might be Subaru bound.  Performance wise, the Twin-Clutch SST transmission will be available for all GSR models along with upgraded Bilstein shocks.  On the the performance/aesthetics side, BBS wheels and leather encased Recaro seats will also be available this year.  Not too much going on for this new year, but those are the main enhancements available for the 2009 J-Spec EVO X, so expect a similar upgrade for our USDM versions.

Electric Porsche breaks cover

Rumors of RUF's impending electric Porsche were true, except that the actual vehicle is based on a Porsche 911, not the Cayman as previously reported. Powered by a three-phase electric motor that offers about 200 horsepower along with an impressive 480 lb.-ft. of torque, the eRUF Model A can reportedly hit 60 miles per hour in under seven seconds and can reach a top speed of 160. Power comes from a lithium iron phosphate battery pack, which produces 317-volts and 480-amps and is made up from 96 individual cells. A full charge takes a rather long 10-hours, and regenerative braking is included in the package allowing for a range of up to 180 miles. From the outside, you'd never really know that something was different about this 997, except that it doesn't produce that soul-stirring flat-six sound. This is still just a concept and its specifications are subject to change. We can be sure, though, that this isn't the last electrically-powered sportscar set to hit the market.

Nissan GT-R Next Stop

Nissan's new GT-R has been making its rounds in Japan and the U.S., and the next stop Godzilla is making is in the Land Down Under.  Set to release next year in April, Nissan of Australia just began official pre-orders for their supercar on the same day the 2008 Australian International Motor Show begins, which so happens to be today. If you're curious about any possible differences between the Australian GT-R, and the one we're getting in the States, there's nothing that really stands out except the price. Retailed at a price of 148,800AUD for the base model and 152,800AUD for the Premium model, Nissan definitely isn't cutting the Australian market any slack with their supercar.  If you're not sure how much US dollar amount is compared to the AUD value, just know that the GT-R would be only retailing for 100,000AUD if Australians were lucky enough to get U.S. pricing.

Nissan Announces Pricing For The 2009 Z Roadster

Nissan just announced pricing for the 2009 Nissan 350Z Roadster, which is now on sale at Nissan dealers worldwide.  Available in 3 different trims, the new Roadsters are all equipped with a standard VQ35HR 3.5L V6 engine that produces 306 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque.  New enhancements for the 2009 model year Z include a brand new Moonlight White exterior color.  Here are the listed prices:

  • 350Z Enthusiast 6MT: $36,870 / 5AT: $37,870
  • 350Z Touring 6MT: $39,220 / 5AT: $40,220
  • 350Z Grand Touring 6MT: $41,470 / 5AT: $42,570

First instrumented testing of Corvette ZR1

Car and Driver recently strapped its test gear to the new Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and, as expected, recorded some impressive numbers. All eyes have been on the supercar Vette as it enters the boxing ring to duke it out with the heavy-hitting Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR, Nissan GT-R and Porsche GT2 (among others), and it looks like the latest Corvette will more than hold its own. According to C&D's trusty electronic gear, the supercharged 638-hp beast knocked off a 0-60 mph time of just 3.4 seconds as it continued towards a blistering 7.6 second 0-100 mph run. The quarter mile was cracked in 11.5 seconds @ 128 mph (Chevrolet claims 11.3 seconds, but the guys at C&D didn't believe in "...that sort of drivetrain abuse" to get lower numbers). The top speed also remains unverified as the team "ran out of room" before they could hit the claimed 205 mph. Under braking, the ZR1 set a new C&D record as it hauled itself down from 70 mph in just 142 feet. Of course, we must mention the obligatory claimed Nürburgring lap time of 7:26 (at the hands of Chevrolet). So you don't have to Google the competition's best-claimed Ring times yourself, here they are: Porsche GT2 - 7:32, Nissan GT-R - 7:29, and the Dodge Viper ACR - 7:22. Of course, we'd like to see all four on the track under identical conditions, and with some digital timing gear!

Spy Shots: Nissan 370Z again, with interior shots

Nissan continues to parade around a 370Z prototype near the Nürburgring in Germany, and today our spy photogs have nabbed its interior during a refueling stop. As you can see, the interior is definitely a Nissan, and in facts looks Infiniti-esque thanks to the large nav screen and joystiq-controls dominating the center stack. The spies say the quality of materials appear to be a vast improvement over the current model, and you can see this particular prototype's interior is wearing bright orange suede door panel inserts and orange seats. Certainly livens things up, no? Elsewhere there are three gauges atop the dash that point towards the driver and big paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, which our sources suggest may indicate that Nissan will use a version of the GT-R's six-speed dual-clutch transmission. That may not be the case, however, as the current car's five-speed automatic with paddle shifters, which Infiniti already pairs with the company's 3.7L V6 in its G cars, would look the same from peering in through the car's windows.

Mazda MX-5 will get lighter, maybe alternative powertrain

The Mazda MX-5 is one of the world's best handling cars under $25,000, and as much as we Americans want more power and size to turn the Japanese roadster into a proper pony car, that's probably not going to happen. Increased fuel economy and CO2 reductions will force the MX-5 into the same situation as larger vehicles. It has to get more efficient and lighter to stay competitive. MX-5 program manager Takao Kijima told Drive that Mazda is looking at alternative powertrains for its little roadster, but the Zoom Zoom specialists are also looking to drop 10% of the car's weight. One way to improve efficiency is with diesel technology. Diesels can be 30% more efficient than petrol powerplants, but beefier diesel parts means that total displacement must be smaller than the current engine's 2.0 liters. Another idea is a hybrid, which, like the diesel, would provide instant torque that would also add weight to a vehicle that's just about to go on a diet. Kijima also stated that any MX-5 would absolutely have to have 50/50 weight distribution, meaning that a hybrid with its heavy batteries would by tricky, but not impossible. For our money, we'll take a 10% lighter Miata with a smaller turbocharged, direct-inject gas engine with ethanol injections.

E7 police car concept

We haven't heard a peep from Carbon Motors in a very long time, but that doesn't mean the company hasn't been hard at work on its purpose-built E7 police car concept. To prove that it's moving forward, the automaker-to-be has just released two shots of a real E7. What's more, the company will show the car to prospective clients – police officers – at the upcoming 115th Annual International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference and Exposition. Unlike curent cop cars driven by these officers, usually police-spec Crown Vic Interceptors, the E7 was specifically designed just to do police duty. Instead of a 4.6-liter Ford V8 engine underhood, the E7 will feature a clean-diesel engine capable of running on biodiesel. With a cockpit derived from jet-fighter technology that includes built-in radar, radiation and biological threat detectors among other techno goodies, the E7 sounds suitably high-tech for real-life crime fighters of the modern era. To further highlight this point, check out the video, along with the press release, after the break.

Nissan 370Z caught undisguised

Nissan's upcoming redesign of its Z car is almost here, and proof positive is this prototype caught cruising around in the vicinity of Germany's famed Nürburgring. The redesign is on full display here, with the boomerang-style headlights and taillights first seen on the new Maxima clearly visible. The whole front end is new but retains a visual connection with its predecessor, while big fender flares give away that the new car might be rolling on a wider track. There are also a few more kinks and creases on the new car, which are on display in the chunky C-pillar. We think it looks terrific as an attractive evolution of the current 350Z. The new car will change its nomenclature slightly to 370Z when it debuts this auto show season thank to the addition of Nissan's new 3.7L V6 that will be producing well over 300 horsepower in the new Z. Word has it that Nissan has also worked hard to address one of the biggest criticisms against the current car: weight. We'll probably have more spy shots of the 370Z as soon as Nissan begins running it around the 'Ring, and wouldn't be surprised to see the car officially debut at next month's LA Auto Show.

2009 Mazda RX-8 R3

The R3 also gets xenon HID headlamps. The best enhancement by far though are the absolutely gorgeous 19 inch forged alloy wheels. Under the skin, the RX-8 R3 also gets a urethane foam filled front cross member to help maintain the relative position of the front wheels and Bilstein dampers. Climb inside the RX-8 and this car certainly feels like a sports car.The current RX-8 is rated at 16 mpg city and 22 highway. That's not spectacular for a 1.3L engine, but then how many naturally aspirated engines that size crank out 232 hp? The downside of rotaries is a comparatively weak torque curve. The absence of valves and pistons that have to change direction allows this rotary to rev like mad up to a 9,000 rpm redline. Combine that with a slick shifting 6-speed gearbox and you have a recipe for some serious sports car fun.
When the time comes to change direction, the RX-8's steering mechanism is definitely up to the task. The effort is a bit on the light side, but there's no slop and adjustments to the wheel angle are perfectly matched by the direction of the car. The double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension do a wonderful job of keeping the rubber on the road. The car's structure feels solid over uneven pavement and despite the relatively narrow 225/40R19 tires, grip was plentiful. The combination of the suspension, steering and relatively low weight of less than 3,100 lbs. yields a responsive and nimble sports car.The bottom line is that even with two extra seats compared to the old RX-7, the latest "hummer" from Japan is truly a sports car. The rear seats are just a bonus for those times when you need to bring along a couple of extra friends. Now that the days of the big SUV are coming to an end, it's time for the "Zoom-Zoom" brand to reclaim its nick-name.

2010 Camaro ordering book leaked online

In just a week's time, anyone so willing will be able to walk into a Chevrolet dealership and order a new 2010 Chevy Camaro. We now have the ordering information that will greet buyers on that blessed day. Thanks to CamaroZ28.com, we have the complete order book that shows standard and optional equipment for LS, LT and SS versions of the car with codes 1LS, 1LT, 2LT, 1SS and 2SS. Basically, the LT won't get the fog lamps of its racier brethren, and only the SS versions get the 6.2L V8, the 20-inch wheel/tire combo, the 4-piston Brembos, and unique instrumentation and fascias. The rear spoiler is standard on the SS but optional on the LT. If you opt for either the 2LT or 2SS you also get a package of amenities that includes leather, an upgraded stereo with redundant steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, a USB port, PDIM, a cargo net, and an upgrade to the mirrors and gauges, but buyers of the 1LT and 1SS can get some of these as options. The complete book is laid out in the gallery below. While LS buyers can only select black or gray for their interiors, LT and SS buyers can opt for beige or Inferno Orange as well, with or without gray or white striping. The sunroof and RS appearance package are available on all but the base LS, as is a special Red Jewel Tintcoat. That RS package also includes special 20-inch aluminum wheels, HIDs, body-color "ditch" molding, unique taillamps and badging, and the rear spoiler. Check out the pages below for more specifics, but make sure to check out the pages about the accessories as well: a Hurst shifter, 21-inch wheels, high wing spoiler, ground effects, special striping and engine covers, and a performance section that includes a catback exhaust, air intake and "shorty" headers. We'll take an Inferno/black 1SS with the performance accessories, RS package, ground effects, high wing, the Hurst shifter and white stripes. Or maybe a 2LT in black with the Inferno interior and white accents. On third thought, what about...aww, this could go on forever. How are you going to order yours?

BMW M3 could campaign in 24 hours of Le Mans

When it comes to racing, diversity is key. Who doesn't love to root for their favorite brand to win against its fiercest rivals? We hope that BMW gets its latest M3 certified by the FIA in time for a showdown against with the Corvette and others in Le Mans GT racing, which will institute a new set of rules for the 2010 season. There's more than one way to get horsepower from a V8 engine, as clearly demonstrated by these two diametrically opposed class competitors. Team Corvette's brute strength and low-down grunt would go up against finesse and high-strung reviness from BMW. Kinda reminds us of the classic Ford versus Ferrari feuds of the '60s. In any case, BMW now needs to work with the FIA to get its racer properly sanctioned and approved, as it has already done for the American Le Mans racing series. Git 'r done, folks.

Porsche plans to take absolute control of VW November 26

For a few years there at large profile gatherings in America – especially sporting events – people wielding signs that referenced the Bible passage "John 3:16" and said things like "Be prepared" and "The end is nigh" were a common sight. We wouldn't be surprised if signs began showing up around VW headquarters that read "He is coming, 26-11-08." But the "he" they'd be referring to is Wendelin Wiedeking, CEO of Porsche, now that Porsche has announced its plans to take a greater-than-50-percent share in VW before the end of November. Porsche's annual meeting is on November 26. The company hasn't said how big a stake it plans to take, nor when it will be doing the taking, but it's apparently ready to get this whole VW-ownership escapade into an endgame. There are still legal issues and technical challenges and Lower Saxony to deal with, but we have a feeling it's going to be a lot more difficult to argue with the phrase "absolute majority."

Cobalt owners take their cars home to Lordstown

Many people choose their car because it is an extension of themselves, their personality, their style and their passion. These folks tend to forge a deep attachment with their automobile, an inanimate object void of emotion. Despite that fact, a vehicle has wants and needs of its own, and some can be more demanding than a small child. As with any parent, there are curious automobile owners who often wonder, where did my baby come from? Recently 134 Chevrolet Cobalt fans got the chance to find out. Back on September 27th, GM opened up the Lordstown, OH plant for 85 lucky owners and their guests. It was a rare chance for many to view the inner workings of an automotive assembly line, without a need to join the UAW. Event attendees received a full facility tour, on site lunch meet and greet, and of course freebee swag. Not surprisingly, the majority of the Cobalt fan base stemmed from the website CobaltSS.net. The SS is about the only Chevy compact that can muster up an emotional following, as evident in the video of John Heinricy tossing the 2008 model around the Nurburgring. The turbocharged ECOtech powered econo car is just one of the models currently produced at the Lordstown plant. The massive facility is also slated to make the Cobalt replacement, the Cruze. Check out the gallery below to view photos from the event.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI Takumi concept hints at future Spec-C

Our Parisian friends over at LeBlogAuto were on hand at the Motorsport Japan 2008 event in Tokyo this past weekend, where FHI unveiled an Impreza-based "concept" dubbed the Subaru WRX STI Takumi. Featuring upgraded springs and shocks, revised suspension bits, lightweight 12-spoke wheels, undisclosed engine tweaks and a slightly reworked exterior, the Takumi foretells the future of the rumored Spec-C variant, due to hit the market sometime next year. Subaru execs at the show remained mum on if when the Spec-C would debut, but the smart money is on the Tokyo Auto Salon this January.

Nissan answers to Porsche, defending its Nurburgring lap time

Earlier this week we told that Porsche is accusing Nissan for cheating, more exactly the GT-R couldn’t race a lap on the Nurburgring (Nordschleife) racetrack in just 7 minutes and 29 seconds. In order to demonstrate this Porsche bought a standard Nissan GT-R, brought it to the German racetrack and the surprise came out: the GT-R raced the lap in 7 minutes and 54 seconds, with over 25 seconds more than the lap raced by Nissan driver. After this, came the response of Nissan which was quite simple: “We’re not going to get into a war of words with Porsche. The final word from us is that it was done on absolutely standard tyres which are available to customers in the showroom. Normal Dunlop road tires, that come with the car!” said Nissan’s European spokesman Neil Reeve.

California is a true Ferrari: sold out through 2010

What recession? Ferrari just confirmed that the Ferrari California is officially sold out through 2010. The 179,000 Euro supercoupe/cab is scheduled to be produced in batches of about 2,000 per year and has been a runaway success for the Maranello manufacturer. Company President Luca di Montezemolo was recently quoted as saying, "In 2008 there was the success of the Scuderia. 2009 will be characterized by the California. It has been an incredible success. We have already sold all of the 2008 and 2009 production. You have to now wait until 2011 for one." Rather than act as a replacement for anything in the current lineup, the California was intended to be an eight-cylinder car that would compliment the F430 and be a vehicle with a lot of flexibility according to Ferrari. While some say it isn't the most beautiful Ferrari they've ever seen, the performance should be pretty spectacular for those lucky souls with a signed contract already in hand. The new direct-injection, 460-hp 4.3L V8 should be more than adequate for propelling this prancing pony down the road with gusto.

Abt VW Scirocco tuning Package Released

Oettinger was the first tuner to show a tuning package for the new Scirocco, and now Abt Sportsline is quickly following. The comprehensive package consists of a full body kit, rear exhaust system plus engine and chassis performance upgrades. On the outside, Abt emphasizes the Scirocco's forward wedged shaped look with a dramatic front bumper fascia, grille, side skirts with two air inlets, roof spoiler, rear wing and rear bumper fascia which accommodates diagonal 4-pipe rear muffler. For brakes and suspension, Abt access their existing parts inventory for sport lowering springs which drop the ride height by 30mm and Abt's brake kit which includes pads, rotor and calipers. Of course, Abt's own BR or AR alloys in 18 to 20 inch size s are available with a selection of tires and wheel spacers. Under the bonnet, Abt raises power output for the 1.4 TSI from 160 hp (119 kW) to 200 hp (147 kW) and the 2.0-liter turbo diesel to 170 hp / 125 kW (standard: 140 hp / 103kW). The 2.0 TSI is increased from the standard 200 hp (147 kW) to 240 hp (177 kW). Available from January 2009, the entire package which includes the body pack, 4-pipe rear muffler, springs and complete wheel set (19 inch AR alloys, diamond-machined and black, plus tyres and wheel spacers) costs a very reasonable 5,990 Euros in Germany.

2009: Civic Type-R Special Edition

This year, Honda's adding in something special for all of the European Type-R enthusiasts out there, and this special something comes in the form of the new Civic Type-R Special Edition trim.  For those of you that thought that Honda had left its roots with their newly featured purple metallic paint for the Type-R, think again.  The Special Edition model will be available in Honda's signature Championship White pain finish, which *gasp* has never been offered in Europe ever.  Contrasting the white will be Honda's red interior of course, and white18" wheels will compliment the Type-R. Mechanically, the Type-R SE will be getting a Limited Slip Differential to increase the car's handling, and during testing, the Special Edition lapped Tsukaba circuit 1.44 seconds faster than the standard Type-R.  Other than that, the engine bay is still the same 2.0L i-VTEC engine that will be available this year.  Just so it's clear, it appears that the Special Edition will only be available for the 3-door hatch version of the vehicle, which the purists out there will definitely appreciate.

Greddy's Fairlady/350Z aero kit

Greddy's just released a fresh new aero kit for the Fairlady/350Z, and it's definitely got some good show car potential.  The color scheme Greddy used to show off the kit really makes it pop, and the widebody does exactly what it's supposed to do, look loud and stand out.  While we're not totally sold on the hulky diffuser that makes up the rear side of the car, the rest of the kit looks pretty good, and be sure to contact your nearest Greddy dealer to get more info on availability and pricing.

2009 Ford Focus RS 300hp & 325ft-lbs of torque

Ford's new Focus RS has made its second European debut and we've managed to snag some live shots of the new car on the stand. Covered in Ultra Green paint as it is, we could hardly miss it. The new hue is meant to be "a modern interpretation of the 1970's Ford Le Mans Green." In that case, perhaps it should be called Grabber Green? Powered by a turbocharged Duratec 2.5L five-cylinder producing about 300 horsepower and 325 ft-lbs of torque, the new Focus RS is the fastest European Ford ever produced and can hit 60 mph in under six seconds. Front-wheel drive was chosen in lieu of all-wheel as the Blue Oval's 'RevoKnuckle' front suspension system along with the Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing limited-slip differential is said to remove all traces of torque steer. Expect to see the new Focus RS in European dealerships sometime in 2009. Watch out Evo and Wrx/Sti. New Kid on the block.

Nissan defends GT-R 'Ring time

As expected, Nissan has responded to Porsche's claims that the GT-R isn't quite as fast as they say it is. In fact, representatives for the German automaker suggested that Nissan may have used racing slicks to achieve the 7:29:03 lap time of the Nürburgring. Says Nissan, "The final word from us is that it was done on absolutely standard tires which are available to customers in the showroom. They're not trick tires – absolutely standard tires, normal road tires." Despite the allegations, Nissan is remaining calm about the issue, adding that the fast time was set by its racing driver, Tochio Suzuki, and achieved using the GT-R's optional Dunlop tires. Could it be that Porsche purchased a model with the slightly slower Bridgestones? Maybe, but can having the right tires could account for a 25-second lap time difference? In any case, Nissan's taking the high-road, falling short of suggesting that Porsche's drivers are slow.

2010 Chevy Camaro standard and optional equipment list revealed

The highly anticipated 2010 Chevy Camaro is now only a few months from hitting the showroom floor, and we're just getting the final scoop on standard and optional content that will be available for all five Camaro variants. Customers wanting to order a Camaro can choose from LS, 1LT, 2LT, 1SS and 2SS models, and standard and optional equipment varies greatly between each package. The base model LS comes equipped with OnStar, 18-inch rims, and a 300-hp V6 engine, and the only optional item is floor mats. The 1LT package includes optional 19-inch rims, a Boston Acoustics sound system and a sunroof. The 2LT gets standard 19s, the sound system, leather seats, ambient lighting and Bluetooth and USB connections. If you want your Camaro to include a 422-hp V8, you'll need to step up to the SS. The 1SS package includes standard 20-inch rims, four-piston Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential and engine and transmission cooler. Options include polished aluminum wheels, a sunroof, and the upgraded sound system. The 2SS model adds all the standard features of the 1SS package and the 2LT package plus options including dual rally strips, a sunroof, and the Inferno Orange Accent interior. All trims except for the LS model have the option of adding the RS package, which gets you 20-inch rims, HID lamps, a spoiler (for the LT model), a Midnight Silver paint finish, darkened tail lights, and body colored molding. Camaro sales may still be a few months away, but you'll be able to order yours at a local dealer beginning October 13. The complete list of standard and optional equipment is available for your perusal after the jump.

Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart Sportback

Rounding out the Mitsubishi Lancer line this year is the new Lancer Sportback, also in extra spicy Ralliart flavor. It's everything you love about the Lancer plus the space, versatility and convenience of a wagon – the first time since the '80s you'll be able to have your cake and haul it, too. If it weren't for the spoiler, which is aptly called the "rear wing", and the subwoofer in the trunk, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was just another cool little wagon. But thanks to the Lancer Ralliart's turbocharged 2.0L MIVEC engine producing 237 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque and Twin-Clutch SST transmission, you'll soon be able to get those groceries with gusto. And it's the only wagon we know of with an access hatch to the central differential.

Nissan says next 370Z to compete with Porsche

When Nissan launched the 350Z in '02, it was working hard to reinvent itself and the new Z was clearly its halo car in the U.S. market. Now that that the revival has come and gone, expect the new 370Z to take on a new tack as a harder edged vehicle. In fact, Nissan plans to take on Porsche, the most classic of all sportscar manufacturers, with its newest coupe. Equipped with a larger 335-hp 3.7-liter V6 engine and having gone on a serious diet, possibly shedding as much as 200 lbs, the new Z will definitely have the cojones to keep up with its foes, including the Cayman, and its shorter wheelbase and wider track should conspire to make it quite the handler as well. We'll get our first official look at the new son-of-Godzilla at the LA Auto Show, shorty after which the Nissan 370Z should show up in Japanese dealerships with U.S. delivery at a later date. Hopefully, not too much later.

Infiniti G37 Convertible found

A second teaser shot for the upcoming Infiniti G37 Convertible has found its way onto the web, and the timing couldn't be better considering the debut of the Lexus IS250C today at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. Both cars will be setting their sites on the BMW 335i convertible, and the G37 'vert will be packing a 328-horsepower 3.7L V6 in its holster when the time comes. Other features include a three-piece folding hardtopIts and a seven-speed automatic transmission, as well as a completely redesigned rear end to accommodate the new roof. The G37 Convertible's official debut isn't until the LA Auto Show in November, at which time we'll get to fully see how the G37 Coupe translates into a convertible.

2009 Audi S4 supercharged 3.0-liter V6

Infiniti G37 Convertible foundWe were never particularly fond of the last generation Audi S4. With 4.2-liters of V8 hanging precariously over the front axle, it provided adequate thrust, but never delivered the dynamic thrills we used to associate with the twin-turbo'd V6 fitted to the B5 platform. Apparently Audi agrees, and in a move to further differentiate its lineup – while also providing some competition to the all-conquering BMW 335i – it's fitted the new S4 with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 putting out 333 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. With a 0-60 time of 5.1 seconds and the Quattro all-wheel-drive system sending 60 percent of the power to the rear wheels, the 2009 Audi S4 is ready to do battle and we're truly looking forward to our time behind the wheel.

Ferrari California 460hp

It's not every day that Ferrari unveils a new sportscar. And when it does, it's almost invariably billed as a successor to the one that came before, or a version of something already on the market. But the Ferrari California is an entirely different beast, expanding the Prancing Horse's line-up into a new segment, and it certainly looks the part when viewed up close. We'll have to reserve our judgment for the time being on the California's driving dynamics, but the Italians promise it'll keep up its end and then some with its new direct-inject, 460-hp version of the company's 4.3L V8.

Lamborghini Estoque LIVE

You've seen the whole Estoque shebang in Lamborghini's words, pictures, and videos. Let us add our own word to it: hmmm. It's a Lamborghini, so it's hard not to like it. And we hate to tread out the refrain, but it's much nicer in person. It feels, though, like they wanted to get this thing done in time for the show, and it needs a couple more drafts. The front aspect is spot on -- not a tough feat since it's Lamborghini's language. From the side, the it looks a little too stretched forward of the A-pillar, and there's more than one personality fighting for attention if you follow the car from snout to rear. And the back, while beautiful, is... yes... Challenger-esque... But don't take our words for it

2009 Volkswagen GTI

We're still sour that the Scirocco isn't making it to our shores, but Volkswagen is throwing us a bone with the restyled 2009 MK VI GTI. The new front end made a successful transition from the low-slung hatch that's beyond our reach, finally eschewing the gaping maw that's afflicted Audi designs of late. Both three- and five-door variants were on hand here at the Paris Motor Show, and overall, we're even more smitten with version six then we were with the outgoing model. As reported previously, the new GTI is packing a revised 2.0-liter TFSI four putting out 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque through either a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox and on to the front wheels through a new electronic limited-slip differential (XDS). After spending some time inside we were reminded that VW (and Audi) still make some of the best interiors in the biz, with suitably supportive seats, confident switchgear and a small diameter steering wheel that we want to put under our pillow at night.

Motor Trend reveals 10 finalists

Motor Trend says on its blog that they are busily putting 17 new or newly redesigned cars through an "exhaustive evaluation process" that will result in 10 finalists for their Car of the Year award. With cars like the BMW 1 Series, Nissan GT-R, Audi A4, Acura TSX and Pontiac G8, we'd have a hard time choosing five more. Wildcards are the Hyundai Genesis, the Mazda6, the Volkswagen CC and the Dodge Challenger. They'll be competing with the Acura TL, Honda Fit, Jaguar XF, Lincoln MKS, Nissan Maxima, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Corolla, and the Toyota Matrix. As a member of the Armchair COTY Comittee, which ones are on your top ten? Is the GT-R a shoe-in or will the Challenger win on pure musclecar charisma? The magazine will announce the winner in its January issue.

Lotus unveils even lighter 2009 Exige Cup 260

Lotus released its Exige Cup 260 for the 2008 model year to terrorize much larger and pricier cars on race tracks 'round the world. For 2009, the British automaker has spiced things up by 'adding lightness' in the marque's grand tradition. Weight drops by over 80 pounds this year to just under a ton thanks to copious use of carbon fiber. Coupled with a 257-horsepower 1.8-liter Toyota-sourced mill force fed through an intercooler by an Eaton M62 supercharger, the '09 Exige Cup 260 should hit 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. Electronic goodies such as launch control combined with variable traction control, plus 40 kilograms of downforce at 100 mph, do their best to keep the car planted on the track. Race-ready bits like forged wheels wearing Yokohama A048 LTS tires, Eibach springs over one-way adjustable Bilstein dampers and cross-drilled and ventilated discs at all four corners highlight the serious intent of this car. Plus, a standard roll over hoop, dealer-installed full front roll cage and FIA compliant electronics are there to keep your track days safe. Those masochists wishing to drive the Exige Cup 260 on the streets can do so anywhere in the European Union where it's road-legal, but that would be missing the point entirely. Get yours in the U.K for £45,995. Full specifications and ordering information are after the break.

SMS releases new images, price range for 570 and 570X Challenger

Steve Saleen's fledgling new company, SMS Supercars, is getting ready to officially debut its first production car and has released a few more photos and information regarding the 570 and 570X Challenger. According to the new press release, the two models are targeted to start at $60,000 and $70,000, respectively. Yes, that's quite a chunk of change, but SMS is making it worthwhile with an extensive list of upgrades. Starting with the powertrain, the SMS 296 supercharger pushes massive amounts of air to the 5.7L HEMI, and true enthusiasts will be glad to know that a proper 6-speed manual transmission will be doing the shifting. Both models also get a high performance suspension, exhaust, 20-inch wheels, and 14-inch front and 12-inch rear brakes. For the exterior, SMS replaces the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and hood, and adds a rear spoiler. The 570X model also receives carbon fiber front and rear splitters, a carbon fiber diffuser, and a rear wing that replaces the spoiler. The interior receives upgrades as well, including two-tone leather sport seats, leather door inserts, a leather grip shifter, 200-mph gauge cluster, and auxiliary gauges for the supercharger. Each vehicle will also be personally signed by Steve Saleen.

Lamborghini Estoque

After several weeks of teaser shots from Lamborghini we finally got a full view of the Lamborghini Estoque concept this morning ahead of its official debut tomorrow morning. However, the photos were relatively small and details were scarce, but we are now able to bring you high resolution photos and full details via a press release from Lamborghini. The Estoque, named for the sword use by the Matador in a bull fight, is actually listed as mid-engined with the motor placed behind the front axle. The car sits extremely low at just 4.43 feet high, but still provides plenty of interior space for all four passengers due to the long wheelbase of over three meters. As we expected, Lamborghini states that no official decision has been made regarding production, but did hint that the Estoque could lead to a third model in the lineup with numerous engine possibilities including the V10 from the Gallardo LP560-4, a turbocharged V8, a V8 with a hybrid mode, or even a high-performance TDI. We'll be sure to bring you any additional information we can get tomorrow at the Paris Motor.

Volvo developing 300-hp C30 with AWD

Rumors of a new Volvo hot hatch have gotten hot again with talk of a new 300-horsepower C30 for Europe. According to reports, the new model would be powered by the same 2.5-liter inline-five cylinder turbo engine that powers the new Ford Focus RS. One difference between the two cars, which share a similar platform, is that the Swedish beauty would be offered with a Haldex all-wheel drive system in contrast to the Blue Oval's torque-steer inducing front-engine, front-drive layout. Larger 20-inch wheels ought to fill out the arches quite nicely, and a special body kit should bring the whole look closer to the tarmac. To keep demand high, Volvo may limit the new model to 4,500 units worldwide, though we have no idea where it will offer the hatch besides the U.K. Considering that the Swedish automaker has diluted its R-nameplate, we're also not certain what this performance-minded C30 will be called, but we're sure it'll be the most fun we've had in a Volvo for quite a long time.

Four-door Ferrari PanaQuattroMeraPorte

Since everyone else is getting in on the four-door supercar game, Ferrari might as well give one of its cars the taffy pull treatment. Rather than wait for one of the design houses classically associated with the Prancing Horse to apply masterstrokes of design, Russian enthusiast Krasnov Igor came up with his own quad portal thoroughbred. We're not thrilled with the results, but we'll bestow an A for effort. Looking like a Scaglietti that got tossed in the blender with an Elise's roof and a Lamborghini tail, the wheelbase and proportions just don't look quite right. Perhaps the Lambo tail is a nod to the car's intended role as a competitor to the Lamborghini Urus/Estoque/whatevertheywannacallit, but we're thinking that car's styling will be far more cohesive.

500hp Super-tuned F-350 Striker diesel

If the super-tuned F-350 Striker diesel dually doesn't float your boat, the specialty tuners at Performance West will have a tire shredder of smaller proportions for you at SEMA next month. The F-150 Striker R will be unleashed on attendees of the Las Vegas tuner spectacular with Shelby GT500KR-inspired styling similar to its big brother and a power story all its own. Our friend Mike Levine from Pickuptrucks.com gave us the low-down on the Striker R's power numbers, and they're pretty impressive. It gains motivation from Ford's 5.4L V8 mated to a massive 2.4L Kenne Bell Blowzilla supercharger and intercooler, giving it a healthy 500 ponies. Other power enhancers include a cold air intake, Boost-a-Pump, Optimizer II electronic engine management system and a Corsa Cat-Back exhaust. The Sriker R will be kept pinned to the pavement with a Bell Tech suspension package, and the rear differential will receive a Striker R alloy cover. Stopping force for this powerful pickup comes via 15-inch Big Bite cross-drilled rotors. A vehicle isn't SEMA-worthy without great-looking wheels and tires, and Performance West went to Pirelli for the proper equipment – stylish 22-inch alloy wheels and Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico ultra-high-performance tires. In our humble opinion, the GT500KR treatment translates better to the F-150 than the F-350, as the Striker R incorporates big upper and lower front air dams and two imposing hood scoops to keep the air flowing. No GT500KR look-alike would be worth its weight in spit without dual racing stripes, and the Striker R uses the Badass Blue variety with contrasting silver paint directly from the Shelby Mustang concept.

Toyota develops new rear window airbag for small cars

Safety technology has improved by leaps and bounds over the last few decades, and just about every automaker now knows how to score a five star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Toyota is looking to keep the stars coming by developing a new rear window airbag that will be standard equipment on its upcoming iQ micro car. A quick glance at micro-vehicles like the iQ shows that there is very little space between the back seat and the rear window, which means there won't be as much metal to absorb the impact of a rear collision. With Toyota's new rear window airbag, the rear air bag is ejected from the roof lining during a fender bender. Toyota says it will help protect the heads and necks back seat passengers, which is all the more important in smaller vehicles like the iQ. In addition to this new bag, Toyota wants to improve its safety reputation by making side curtain and shield airbags standard for all of itsmodels.

Porsche accuses Nissan GT-R of cheating the 'Ring

Sour grapes or legitimate complaint? That's the question we're left pondering after reading that Porsche believes Nissan must have cheated to record its 7:29:03 lap time of the famed Nürburgring race circuit. Porsche claims that it had been suspicious of the Nissan's lap times, so it acquired a U.S.-spec GT-R for testing back-to-back with its own 911 Turbo and GT2. The result? The mighty Godzilla was toppled by the Teutonic German duo, with the GT-R posting times a good 25-seconds slower than Nissan's claim. How can Porsche explain the discrepancy? "This wonder car with 7:29 could not have been a regular series production car. For us, it's not clear how this time is possible. What we can imagine with this Nissan is they used other tires," says August Achleitner, the man in charge of the 911 program. There is footage of the GT-R lapping the 'Ring at high speed, but it's taken from inside the car where the tires cannot be seen. Considering the fact that Nissan saw fit to issue a press release commemorating the car's fast-lap, we doubt this is something that will be taken lightly. There's a big can 'o worms here, and Porsche's in the corner holding the opener.

Audi S3 gets 7-speed DSG

Audi made a bit of a splash earlier this year with the announcement that the new-for-'09 S3 would be available in either the three-door style or the more practical Sportback five-door hatch. Equipped with a high-pressure 2.0-liter turbo engine with 265-horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, the S3 can scoot to sixty in just 5.5 seconds, all while getting nearly 30 miles per gallon. Making the most of that power is the firm's new seven-speed twin-clutch S-Tronic gearbox, which we've had nothing but good things to say about in its past six-speed incarnation. That gearbox will command a £1,450 premium over the standard manual transmission for our European friends. That price will also include twin steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, another first for the S3. Total cost for the three-door stands at £28,920, while £29,420 will get you an S3 with Sportback. Of course, Quattro all-wheel drive comes standard on both. Sadly, the whole S3 package is available only in Europe.

Aston Martin DBS gets Touchtronic tranny

The ultimate Aston Martin is only a year old, but it's already getting some updates including a new automatic transmission. The DBS will receive an optional automatic transmission dubbed the TouchTronic 2 for the 2009 model year, a re-engineered version of the ZF six-speed unit equipped in the DB9. Given the DBS' more harder attitude over the DB9, the transmission has been tuned for faster, more aggressive shifts in order to maintain the same acceleration capabilities as the manual transmission version and giving drivers the choice of swapping their own cogs via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. When the situation is more relaxed the driver can enjoy some tunes over the new 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen stereo system. For those inclined to occasionally punish a couple of friends, Aston is now offering a pair of +2 rear seats. The company claims this is at the request of customers, but frankly, customers who make such silly requests should probably be sent elsewhere anyway. The automatic DBS commands a $4,000 premium over the three pedal variant and starts at $273,000.

Maserati GranTurismo MC Corse Concept Unveiled

Maserati Drive-Like-a-Million-Bucks has released details and photos of its latest competition model, the Maserati GranTurismo Inexpensive-High-End-Sports-Cars Nov-07 MC Corse Concept which is based on the 430 horsepower GranTurismo S. The engine from the GranTurismo S has been upgraded with a new intake system, catalytic converters and a center-exit exhaust that boosts horsepower to 450. The suspension has also been upgraded and there is a new larger rear spoiler and increased track. 8x12" front and 18x13" rear wheels fitted with racing slicks help put all that power to the ground. In order to keep that power under control the brake discs have been enlarged with monobloc racing calipers and there is a FIA-approved rollcage for even more protection.

Corvette ZR1 to cost £109,000 in UK

The car that Top Gear liked to drive, if not exactly to look at, has a price they definitely won't want to pay. At an on-the-road price of £109,000, the ZR1 costs nearly £48,000 pounds more than a Z06 in the UK. As if that weren't problematic enough, that price puts the left-hand-drive-only ZR1 £8,000 past the 911 Turbo and a colossal £55,000 beyond the GT-R Premium Edition. True, that's still the base GT-R, but Nissan has a whole lot of room to play with when it prices the V-Spec. True as well, the price of the ZR1 also includes a driver training course and a 3-year / 60,000-mile warranty, which should count for something. Perhaps not £55,000, though. Luckily for Chevrolet UK, it will only have to sell two of them this year, and single digits in the years to come. You can read the full press release after the jump, and then decide if you'd rather have one lump of incredible American metal or a GT-R and a Swiss bank account.

Mercedes-Benz reveals SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S

As the era of the Mercedes McLaren SLR winds down to its conclusion sometime in 2009, Mercedes-Benz is releasing what may be the ultimate example of the breed. The SLR 722 S Roadster picks up where the 722 coupe left off dropping the 650-hp supercharged 5.5L V8 into the open top body shell. With a top speed of 220.6 mph, this may be the fastest open top production car ever built. And unlike the first generation Dodge Viper, Mercedes has devised a soft top that can withstand sustained 200 mph+ top speeds. Mercedes has tapped into McLaren's F1 experience to create the fully carbon-fiber body that can provide the structural integrity needed at those speeds. The semi-automatic top just needs to be unlatched from the windshield header manually before the rest of the process is handled by the electrical actuators. The vehicle dynamics are also aided by dropping the suspension by 10 mm at each end of the car and recalibrating the spring and damper rates. Only 150 examples of the 722 S Roadster will be made available starting Jan. 1 2009.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR

For the second time within the period of a month, we check out a Mitsubishi. The only difference being that this is a car the triple-diamond brand really should be making. Scrap the rest of the product line. Don’t waste your time on the Eclipse. Galant? See our earlier review. The only car Mitsubishi needs to be building is the legendary Lancer Evolution.

What is it?
A winged, blinged all-wheel-drive sport sedan, the Lancer Evolution GSR is a continuation of a line of long-legendary rally cars that first gained notoriety on the World Rally Championship. Originally designed as a homologation model for WRX, worldwide demand grew and the first models exported to the United States were the Evo VIII or Evo 8. As with the Nissan GTR, the Lancer-Evolution’s reputation preceded its North American arrival by way of the exposure it received on the Grand Turismo video game.

What’s it up against?
The most comparable model to the Lancer Evolution is definitely the Subaru WRX-STi. Another possible contender would be the Ford Focus RS, which hasn’t yet arrived on these shores.

Any breakthroughs?
Althouh not available on our test car since it was a GSR, the other version of the Evo (Lancer Evolution MR) is equipped with a six-speed twin-clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST). For the purpose of this review, we will concentrate on the five-speed manual GSR.
Powered by the forcefulness of a 2-liter inline four-cylinder engine with Mitsu’s MIVEC variable valve timing system, the intercooled and turbocharged engine produces 291-horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.

Why you would buy it:
You like drawing attention from fan-boys and haters alike, and fancy yourself as a potential World Rally Cup champion in the making.

2009 Saleen Dark Horse Mustang

"A dark horse, which had never been thought of, and which the careless St. James had never even observed on the list, rushed past the grandstand in sweeping triumph." Beautiful words from the quotable Benjamin Disraeli, and inspiration for the name of the latest Mustang to come from Saleen's stable. Due to the car's name it may sound like our title is a clever play on words, but the truth is our seat time was limited to the passenger seat. We can't blame Saleen for being careful with the car - the 2009 Dark Horse Mustang you see here is the first one off the assembly line and is the only one built so far. To their credit, Saleen did take us out to Willow Springs Raceway outside of Los Angeles for some flying laps, so we were able to experience the full capabilities of the car's performance. Follow the jump to hear about our day at the track with perhaps the most fearsome production Mustang ever built.

Spied? Renaultsport Megane III

This image has been circulating the French motoring sites, showing what could be the new Renaultsport version of the automaker's new Megane which is set to debut next week at the Paris Motor Show. Although indications are that this is a Photoshop-manipulated image, it could give a fairly accurate preview of what the new hot hatch could look like. Renault has gone to great lengths to differentiate the different body-styles in the Megane range, and the RS version would of course be based on the three-door hatch variant. The image shows a single exhaust exiting from the center of the rear diffuser, with jumbo 18-inch anthracite multi-spoke wheels and some extra aerodynamic body elements. We'll all want to know what will reside under the hood, likely to be a derivation of the current model's 2.0-liter four. The most recent evolution of the engine produces some 230 horsepower in the latest Megane R26.R track-hatch, but only time (and assuredly plenty of speculation) will tell how much power the first performance version of the Megane III will be putting down on European roads.

Car & Driver runs this year's Lightning Lap at VIR

Every year Car & Driver does something we can only dream about doing: take the whole gamut of today's hottest cars and run them around the 4.2-mile track at Virginia International Speedway. It's called the Lightning Lap, and it's basic purpose is to discover which cars give you the most bang for your buck. The invite list reads like a who's who of sportscars, and this year ranges from the 2008 Chevy Cobalt SS to the 2008 Mosler MT900S. Twenty-two cars in all were tested, and other notable participants include the '09 Cadillac CTS-V, '09 Nissan GT-R, '08 Dodge Viper ACR and '08 Ferrari F430 Scuderia (sorry, apparently the Corvette ZR1 wasn't available, which would have made this the most epic event ever). Think of the Lightning Lap as the biggest comparison test you've ever seen, and a great way to figure out how much performance you're getting for your dollar since the cars are judged strictly on lap times only. The cars are divided up into five classes according to price with vehicles like the Cobalt SS and Dodge Cailber SRT4 taking up residence way down in the LL1 class and the Ferrari and Mosler holding court in the most expensive LL5 class. This year there was no LL4 class, but LL3 contains the bulk of participants. We've got a gallery of shots from the event below provided courtesy of Car and Driver and a list of all the entrants after the jump, but you'll want to click through and read the whole thing for yourself. We're already angling with our friends over there to see if we can sit trackside and watch next year when the next Lightning Lap goes down.
